October 24, 2015The Latino Youth Leadership Conference featured two tracks for students and for the first time hosted a Spanish Speaking Parent Workshop “Why College and How to Apply”  in partnership with the Rutgers University - Newark Office of University- Community Partnerships who share a deep commitment to engage with Newark and the surrounding region. The students workshops included: The Police and You! Conflict Resolution and Man-UP Hermano! -Leadership Training! These workshops included the important life skills within the Latino community; empowering our families, leadership training and mentoring opportunities. 

Our distinguised Keynote Speaker was Ramón J. Pineda, Senior Vice President and General Manager Univision Local Media. He oversees the operations of the television and radio stations in the New York market. Our Guest Speaker was Michael J. Plata, Esq. President of the Hispanic Bar Association and named a “rising star” for the 2010, 2012, and 2013 editions of New Jersey “Super Lawyers” by Law and Politics Magazine.

Our panelist consisted of:  The Honorable Council President Councilwoman M. Crump, North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos, Dr. Diane Hill, Assistant Chancellor at Rutgers University-Newark; Dr. Jose Aviles, Principal of East Orange Campus High; Dr. Jason Cortés, Assistant Professor of Spanish & American Studies at Rutgers University-Newark; Newark Police Department Community Relations, Miguel Anthony Cardona, Student at Church Farm H.S.; Carlos Lejnieks, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties; Amod Field, Interim Principal at International H.S.; Anthony Nuñez, Lambda Sigma Upsilon Fraternity, Inc.


November 1, 2014,  The Latino Youth Leadership Conference featured three tracks of workshops-Dangers of Social Media, Mentorship and You and Man-UP Hermano- Leadership Training! These workshops included the important life skills within the Latino community; leadership training and mentoring opportunities.  In partnership with the Rutgers University - Newark Office of University- Community Partnerships who share a deep commitment to engage with Newark and the surrounding region.

Our distinguished Keynote Speaker is Actor/Director Renoly Sanitago. Born in Lajas, Puerto Rico, spent his childhood in Union City, New Jersey, and currently resides in New York City.  Renoly made his film debut co-starring in the blockbuster hit 'Dangerous Minds' alongside Michelle Pfeiffer.   He plays other major roles in Hollywood films, his credits including: 'Hackers' with Angelina Jolie, 'Daylight' with Sylvester Stallone, also 'Con Air' with Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich. He is currently developing new acting, writing and production ventures across some exciting genres at home and abroad, also community Arts projects.  He is writing new songs in English and Spanish and is presently recording music for his debut album.  Renoly’s next feature film is ‘Grand Street’ with Kelly McGillis, currently in post-production.                     

Our panelist consisted of: Keith Green, CEO & President of United Way of Essex and West Hudson, Carlos Valentin, Executive Director of Aspira NJ, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson and Union Counties; Essex County Prosecutor’s Office; Author  Dr. Jose Aviles, and our Special Guest Mr. Yari Pares East Side H.S Guidance Counselor; Montclair University UpWard Bound Program, Rutgers University-Newark Office of University Community Partnerships and other community advocates.


On October 5, 2013, we had our First Annual Latino Youth Leadership Conference at New Jersey Institute of Technology-Newark, NJ in collaboration with NJIT-Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, United Way of Essex and West Hudson, Aspira of NJ and our own Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s Newark Youth Policy Board. 

This board focuses on creating policies, practices and programs which promote youth development for all our cities’ youth; chaired by Deputy Mayor Margarita Muñiz and Dr. Robert Johnson.

The “Rising Star” for the 2010, 2012, and 2013 editions of New Jersey “Super Lawyers” by Law and Politics Magazine, Michael J. Plata, Esq. was the keynote speaker.

Michael J. Plata is a founding partner of Plata Ferrer & Gutierrez LLC, where his practice is focused on complex business and commercial litigation in federal and state court. Sharing his life experience and how he achieved his goals will inspire our young men to continue on their road to success.

 Our panelist consisted of: Honorable Senator Teresa Ruiz, Councilman Anibal Ramos, Newark Municipal Council; Freeholder E. Junior Maldonado, Hudson County; Carlos Lejnieks, President & CEO of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Hudson, Essex and Union Counties; Carlos Valentin, Executive Director of Aspira; Jose Aviles, Dean of Students at Newark Collegiate Academy; Keith Green, CEO of United Way of Essex and West Hudson; Capt. J. Robles, Newark Fire Department; G. Torres, President of the Hispanic Law Enforcement Society of Essex County and other community advocates.
